Jonathan Isaac: A Unicorn on the Defensive End (Part 2)

David Fizdale free throw rant, got a point?

Coach Fizdale came out fiery in the post-game interview, saying the game was poorly officiated. As, Kawhi got more free throws, than their entire team. There are missed calls in every NBA game, it’s humanly impossible to be 100% accurate, the refs are people.  The game on the surface did not seem like a substantial amount of calls were missed or called unfairly. Kawhi is a dynamic athlete, who attacks the rim. Going to the free throw line is his game, it’s what he does.

I think Fizdale was trying more to fire up his guys. They are playing a very good basketball team, who is disciplined and will not beat themselves. They will play Spurs basketball and the Grizzlies will have to outplay them to win a game. I really think there is not a lot to talk about. The refs called what they saw, and it was not an unfair whistle. Kawhi the dynamic athlete attacked the paint and got the whistle. Memphis does not have an athlete like that, and they’re not a team that is great at dribble penetration. History shows that post-up teams usually don’t draw too many fouls. Props to Fizdale for trying to fire up his guys.

I have one bone to pick with what he said. He said that the Grizzlies don’t get calls, specifically Conley because they are not in the ears of the officials and they have class. Well yes, the Grizzlies do have class but so do the Spurs. The Spurs, starting from Pop and Kawhi are the definition of class in the NBA. They are the poster team for how to be classy. They are respectful and aren’t like the Clippers who are complaining to the officials every chance they get. The Spurs mean class, they are class. So, that is clearly not the reason the Grizzlies are getting calls. Let’s respect the Spurs and show them the appreciation they deserve. A first-class organization and quite possibly the best run franchise in all of American sports. They are class personified.

Any who I like Fizdale, always achieving for the best and not settling. Getting up on national television prepared to get a fine to get his team riled up. Also, maybe he gets in the officials’ head, makes them rethink some calls and helps his team for the rest of the series. This is the passion we need in the NBA, with a perception of resting and super teams this makes our league better. This is basketball, I mean just look at the emotion he shows in the interview. Impressive, keep up the work Fizdale.
